This species has an extremely large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion. The body length is about 8 in (20 cm). The sexes are colored differently. The male has a dark-blue back and a brilliant-blue top of the head, a black mask through the eyes, a black throat, and a shining orange-rufous belly. The female is rather uniformly olive-brown with a lighter belly, and the juvenile is light-brown with whitish spots.
